Here is next week's Gospel for Sunday September 6, 2009:Gospel - Mark 7:31-37 http://www.usccb.org/nab/readings/090609.shtml

Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” —And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to,the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said,“He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Meditation for Sunday, September 6 - Mark 7:31-37

In today's reading , James calls attention to the way we tend to judge people according to the standards of this world. He even calls the extreme judgments that we hold against the poor as distinctions grounded in "evil designs" (James2:4). The question, then, is: "How do we follow James" advice and 'show no partiality' (2:1)? How do we look at every person with dignity, respect and kindness?" The most important thing we can do is take our thoughts captive when it comes to the poor, the elderly, and the downtrodden. Instead of letting our minds go wherever they want when we see someone in need, we should reach out in love. Lend a helping hand. Find a way to lift that person up. Even a smile or kind greeting can go a long way. Whenever we show kindness to the needy, we are saying, "I am not above you; I am one with you." We are imitating Jesus, who reached out to us in love and even became one with us. And that approach can never fail in lifting us all up to heaven! " Jesus, give me your heart of humility and solidarity with the poor and needy. Help me to honor them as rightful heirs of your kingdom."
